Bonfire Night – The Plot

People all over the UK will soon be setting off fireworks and lighting bonfires, Of course this is to celebrate Bonfire Night.

Most of the holidays we celebrate have a story behind them, Bonfire night is no different.

What is Bonfire Night

On 5th November people celebrate with Fireworks, Bonfires and of course tasty toffee apples! Some people might have small bonfire parties in their back gardens whilst some might have attend organised displays (many often do both!)

But why? Because it is the anniversary of the attempt to blow up the houses of parliament, Known as the gunpowder plot.

Often a dummy is put on top of the bonfire, he is called the ‘guy’ named after Guy Fawkes – one of the men behind the gunpowder plot.

What’s the Gunpowder plot

In 1605, Guy Fawkes and his associates planned to blow up the houses of parliament by placing 36 barrels of gunpowder in the cellars under Westminster hall, London. The plan was to blow up King James I and his government during session on 5th November.

This was because of religion. England was a Protestant country and the plotters were Catholic. They wanted England to be Catholic again, which they thought they could do if they killed King James I and his ministers.

What went wrong

The plot was rumbled before they could light the fuses because one of the plotters sent a letter to his friend who worked at the houses of parliament warning him to stay away on November 5th. The king’s guardsmen got hold of the letter. They broke into the cellars and arrested the plotters and they were all executed, including Guy Fawkes. The execution took place in London Tower.
